A few years ago, I was fortunate to acquire a vintage “sweetheart pincushion,” which started my quest to learn more about it and others I’d seen. The story I discovered made it even more precious to me!

During World War I, the pincushions were made by convalescing and disabled British soldiers and sailors, who stitched them as they recovered and sent them home as tokens of affection to loved ones.

In a world where loved ones are little more than a phone call or email away, it is difficult to imagine the despair of separation from our loved ones. Just imagine the rush of emotion the recipients of these tokens must have felt receiving them!

Working from examples found through research, and with my vintage pincushion in hand, I created patterns and collected materials so that you can create your own!

I hope you can join me at my Topsail Beach studio to make your own Sweetheart Pincushion.

The price of this workshop is $110 and includes all the materials to make your pincushion. You are, however, welcome to bring fabric, lace and embellishments of your own if you’d like. Please bring a pair of scissors to class.

Please email me with any questions: lesliemarsh@mac.com
