Zhen Xian Bao by the Sea II
with Leslie Marsh and Kim Beller
Saturday and Sunday, June 9 - 10, 2018
Topsail Beach, North Carolina
Join us as we put a new twist on the Chinese thread book - Zhen Xian Bao (jen shee-ahn bah-oh) - using eco-dyed and Indigo dyed papers, and then embellish our books with hand-made stamps, stitching, and drawings. Our book is based on designs developed by Ruth Smith after her years of research on the ancient art. Kim and I fell in love with them and hope you do too!
Traditionally, these booklets were used for embroidery threads and sewing notions by women in remote villages in China. Sometimes referred to as ‘needle thread pocket’, they make a very unique carrier for thread and needles, but can be used in many other ways as well: to hold photos, collage materials, ephemera, love notes, etc. With fifteen folded hidden pockets, you can stash all kinds of things!
We will have an entire day to dye papers and fabric for the covers using eco-dye and Indigo, before we put it all together and embellish as desired on the second day.
The workshop will be held at my Topsail Beach home studio from 9am - 5pm, with a lunch break from 12:30-1:30. Please feel free to bring your own lunch, or to venture out to one of the nearby restaurants.
Water, tea, and light snacks provided.
