Modular Mica Workshop
with Daniel EssigTuesday - ThursdayAugust 3 - 5, 2021At my Topsail Beach, NC, studio$425plus a $40 kit fee due to Dan the first day of class
Mica -- also called bookstone -- is a silicate mineral found throughout the world.
During this three-day workshop, participants will learn to use and recognize both natural and composite forms of mica by exploring various techniques that emphasize its unique qualities. The workshop will focus on both sewn and hinged bindings, and this combination will lead to book structures with unexpected twists and turns. You will have opportunities to work back into your book creating niches and alcoves to house and protect treasures, images and words.
Students should bring:
- metal ruler
- 1-inch foam brush
- sturdy scissors
- bone folder
- assorted binder clips
- fine-line permanent black marker
- acrylic paints (a few different colors - greens, burnt sienna, black)
- Xacto or mat knife and blades
- cutting mat
- 1/4' Flexcut palm chisel
- Thin or light weight collage materials: decorative papers, photos, insect wings, sheet music, old book pages, leaves, feathers, etc. High contrast imagery works the best.
A $40 kit fee is due the first day of class. The kit provides:
- handmade papers
- waxed linen thread
- PVA bookbinding glue
- dust mask
- tools and materials needed to complete projects
Dan and I are fully vaccinated and we ask that participants are as well. This workshop will be limited to 8 students.
This three-day workshop is $425.
